The road to Tusheti over the Abano Pass is one of the hardest in Georgia and opens only in the warm season; it needs an SUV and experience. In winter, four-wheel drive makes Kazbegi and Gudauri much easier, and the road can close in heavy snow.
Check the weather and pass conditions before leaving and allow extra time: mountain driving is slower than the map suggests.
